Wolves are very special to me. The wolf is the main animal ally in my Sibylline Oracular practice. I call on Wolf first to come and protect my space, followed by owl and snake, but always Wolf first. I call on Wolf in the morning and at night before I go to bed for protection and for guidance when I enter the dream state.
I have an ancestral connection to Wolf energy. My last name is Lopez, and after researching my last name I found out that it is derived from the Latin name for wolf which is Lupus. The original Lopez family were considered the “keepers of wolves” in medieval Spain, and they would keep wolves from running into the nearby towns and attacking people. The royals in gratitude to the family awarded them the name Lopez and gave them a coat of arms with two wolves on it. I wrote the following flash fiction or micro fiction story about my Wolf animal ally inspired by the Wolf Moon three years ago. I hope that anyone who reads this story will be inspired to become an activist and a voice for these majestic animals.
As I heard the howling of wolves throughout the forest, I looked up to see the beautiful illuminated Wolf full moon beckoning me, almost taunting me to connect and absorb its magical energy and light. I felt myself shifting, changing, and morphing as I grew more and more powerful. I felt the energy of the moon helped me become one with it, and one with the power and majesty of the Wolf.
I came face to face with the wolf that was howling minutes before and we locked eyes, and at that moment I felt myself transform—almost shape shift—until the wolf and I became one. This was the moment in which time seemed to stop, the Wolf and I were no longer predator and prey but magical allies and equals. I felt that she had accepted me into her pack and I could hear her words and intentions rushing through my mind, “Call on me when you need me and I will be there.”
I answered her, “What can I do to contribute and to reciprocate to this generous offer?”
I felt and heard Wolf answer quietly, “Protect me as I protect you, be my voice and advocate for me. Keep my pack and I from being hurt, and hunted to extinction. Help us thrive.” I looked into those majestic eyes and I made my promise. I forged an alliance that night and pledged to be her voice, and I hoped that generations after me would continue this sacred task and that they would help me to fulfill the promise that was forged that night under a Wolf Moon.
